The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya kicked off its sports season this weekend with one of the most special events on the calendar: the Winter Series. The winter championship has returned to the Catalan circuit for the second consecutive season, offering a true festival of speed with four categories in competition: GT Winter Series, GT4 Winter Series, Prototype Winter Series and Formula Winter Series.
Low temperatures and rain have put the more than 150 registered drivers to the test, who have played an intense battle on the asphalt of Montmeló. Throughout the weekend, excitement has been guaranteed with up to eleven races held and several surprises in the outcome of the different categories.
Comtoyou Racing and Razoon – more than racing, great dominators in GT
The GT Winter Series category was one of the highlights of the weekend, with three races contested: two sprints and one endurance race. The Comtoyou Racing and Razoon – more than racing teams shone in particular, sharing the victories. The Aston Martin Vantage AMR GT3 EVO of Matisse Lismont and Kobe Pauwels set the pace in the first race, but Razoon – more than racing's response was not long in coming. Leo Pichler and Simon Birch won the following two races, confirming themselves as one of the most solid teams in the event.
Despite these results, the biggest celebration was for Cristiano Maciel and Rui Aguas (AF Corse), who were proclaimed champions of the GT Winter Series despite a complicated weekend in which they were unable to enter the top 10.
Tension until the end in GT4 and the Formula Winter Series
In the GT4 Winter Series, the equality was maximum, with three different teams taking the victory. Callum Davies and Charlie Hart (Rafa Racing by Race Lab) won the first race, while Denny Berndt and Daniel Drexel (Razoon – more than racing) did the same in the second. In the third and final race, the victory went to McKenzy Cresswell and Tom Lebbon (Elite Motorsport). However, a track limits penalty to Davies and Hart altered the final result of the third round, adding more drama to the competition.
In the Formula Winter Series, the real name of the weekend was Gabriel Gómez (US Racing), who was crowned champion after three races full of position changes and decisions at the limit. Although Leo Sami Robinson (Hitech TGR) dominated the first two events, the last race took an unexpected turn, with penalties for Thomas Bearman and Bart Harrison, which gave victory to Kabir Anurag (US Racing).
Danny Soufi, king of prototypes
In the Prototype Winter Series, Danny Soufi (Konrad Motorsport) confirmed his dominance with a double victory that secured the title. Without giving his rivals any options, the Austrian made it clear that this season he has been the undisputed benchmark in the category. Jon Browson-Laurents Hörr and Quentin Joseph-David Droux completed the podium in the first race, while Zino Ferret and Philip Lindberg did so in the second.
With this event, the Winter Series closes its winter tour, but the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will still have an epilogue before definitively saying goodbye to the championship. On March 15th and 16th, the 6 Hours of Barcelona will put an end to the season with an independent endurance race that promises to be another great motoring festival.
